The project “SHOPLANG – The Shopping Language Game”
is about diversity. It’s about bringing together people from 7 different European countries to promote the diversity and the multilingual character of united Europe.
The main idea of the project is to use the informal environment of the supermarket to popularize the less widely used European languages and to provoke the people’s hunger for new knowledge and language skills. This idea of the project is to be achieved through information and promotional campaigns of the 6 target languages, launched simultaneously in the partner countries and supported by publications in newspapers distributed free of charge. Each partner shall make 5 information and promotional campaigns in the basic supermarkets in all target languages except in its own. We expect these language campaigns to help people develop some partial language skills in understanding basic information in the target languages.
Furthermore, during the project’s implementation the partners will establish close relations with local language centres, providing them with materials in the target languages. The resources in the language centres will also provide basic information about the culture, history and traditions of the partner countries. The project envisages an interim and a final survey at the language centres which will measure the interest in the target languages and encourage people to take language courses in these languages.
